Do’s and Don’ts for Choosing House Plants for Kids

Container gardening can be an amazing experience for children—and helping them develop their little green thumbs can be rewarding for parents, too. But it’s important to bear in mind that children’s patience, attention to detail and carefulness is not the same as that of adults. And some kids have special considerations beyond just their ages. These tips can help steer you toward choosing the right house plant variety for the little gardeners in your life.

  • DON’T choose house plants that are finicky. Look instead for plant varieties that are easy to grow, so you can almost guarantee success. Nurture an interest in indoor gardening, and your child will be more interested in taking on more of a challenge later on.
  • DO be mindful of sensitivities. Some house plants are more allergenic than others, which can be a special concern with a child who is prone to allergies or asthma. You may even want to consult with your child’s doctor first...
